Sunday Post

Hymns are balm to my soul. Poetry and music joined.  With my hither and thither travels this summer, I have missed more church than attended, and was feeling the ill effects.  Songs of restoring Truth go a long way toward filling me back up.  Including one from this morning, one verse of which I repeat here:

Come thou fount of every blessing
O to Grace how great a debtor
Daily I'm constrained to be!
Let thy goodness, like a fetter,
Bind my wandering heart to thee;
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it,
Prone to leave the God I love;
Here's my heart, O take and seal it;
Seal it for Thy courts above.

Words: Robert Robinson, 1758
Music:  John Wyeth, 1813

I always thought the words gave such good conveyance of the state of the human heart: prone to wander, prone to leave the God I love- as unendingly restless and driven to distraction as an over- tired two year old.

I'm reminded of my favorite poem whenever I hear this hymn Donne's "Batter My Heart, Three-Personed God"

Thanks for sharing, Anne
