Rocks Nirvana

Baby M discovered a cache of stones fit for a .... er.... rock princess!

"Big rock!  Lots of rocks!"

I love that she is still so fascinated with rocks.  I'd say that she'll grow up to be a geologist, but my sister was equally fascinated with rocks as a child and grew up to be a nurse.  So, there you go.  Where?  I don't know.  Just:  there.

A Family Project, or Bob learns it's best to work alone

This morning, The Husband decided it would be a good idea for the whole family to work on the log house TOGETHER.   In theory, he was right.  In practice?  Not so much.

Here's Bob working on something-or-other framework for the kitchen cabinets:

 "Hey Daddy -- Whatcha doing?"

"Me too!"

Meanwhile, back at the ranch...

Urghhh.

Ug.  "DAAAADDYYYYY!"

"The 10 cents per board rid of its nails bounty doesn't count if *I* do it, G."

Bob did about 15 minutes of work in an hour and 1/2.  We're just no help.

Well, that's not strictly true.  I handed him a level and some screws.  Oh- and a square once.  AND I used the shop vac to suck up all the sawdust around the saw.  Of course, Bob had to go with me down to the shop to get it....

But we were together as a family today, doggonit!  A whiny, frustratingly inept family that Bob surely regrets letting into his log project...  but we were together!

Gardening, mid-summer

My newly-retired father has been putting his considerable gardening skills to work!

The garden June 13:

The garden July 17:

He's also had to put his fence-building skills to work, as the friendly neighborhood deer decided to dine at his all-day buffet.   Buh-bye early crops.   So, he's built a fence around the garden, with doors at each corner, and a-frame wire enclosures (at left in picture) to protect some of his plants in containers.   It's impressive.

It's easier to see the bounty up close:

Soffit

It's a rainy rainy day and not conducive to building someone's dock, so Bob, Chris and Johnny are up on the scaffolding installing the soffit.  Soffitting?  Soffits?   er...  they're nailing boards together to cover the gap between the edge of the roof and the walls.

So I tore in there like hell on wheels, scolded The Husband for not delivering the vegetables from my father's garden to his grandmother, snapped a few pics with my phone and whisked G away for his dentist appointment.  Not very great pictures, and soffits (soffitting?) aren't sexy, but hey:  there are men swarming about my log house who appear to be working.  I will not complain.

Now G's apparent lack of tooth-brushing ability?   Pity the poor boy; my complaints are all directed there.

Well what do you know?

MORE WINDOWS!

Is it possible?  More progress on the house?!  Betcha you thought we'd forgotten we were building a log house, eh?

The Husband put the vertical and horizontal windows in the back (west) gable today.  The horizontal one will be in the upstairs (master) bathroom.  The vertical window (and the previously installed half-round) are in the master bedroom.

*sigh*  It's so much better blogging about the house build.  I'm sure you agree.

Fabulous Fourth Weekend

Thanks to the beautiful weather this weekend, we didn't need to convert our unfinished log home to a picnic pavillion again.  *whew*

Instead, we spent Saturday picnic-ing and fire-working and Sunday eating pizza and getting ice cream and waving sparklers.

No flag cake for me this year; these fruit-topped cupcakes are supposed to resemble pies.
My piping leaves MUCH to be desired....
