Drip?

This cold weather has all but stopped the sap running at The Lake.  In lower elevations, the sugaring has continued unabated, but it is high enough and cold enough in our sugarbush that even on today's comparatively balmy spring day, most of the sap buckets were filled with ice.

Baby M and The Husband went up to the sugarbush today to check on the taps.  She was oh-so-proud to help Daddy do the sugaring, just like her brother.... even if there was not much sap to collect.  I asked if she helped carry the sap buckets, and her reply was: "Oooohhhh -- they were too heavy for me!  I had Daddy carry them."

Me too, sweetie.

Friends, the Next Generation

But first, a gratuitous shot of the house:

Now, back to our regularly scheduled programming.

It warmed my heart on Sunday, to watch The Boy (formerly known as 'Little G') and his friend Con-Man play up at The Lake.   They wandered and imagined and tasted hot syrup.

The reason it warmed my heart is because 25 years ago, it was these two guys wandering and playing at The Lake:

 And now it's their sons.

*sniff*

"Uncle" Jamie and Con-Man spent the afternoon with us collecting sap and gabbing by the evaporator.  I asked Bob and Jamie if it warmed their hearts too, to see their sons playing together as they had years ago.

Apparently, that's a girl question, since it didn't really compute.

Ah, well, I'm mushy enough for all of us.

Tales from the Sugar Shack

Since there was no school today, The Boy spent the day at the lake helping do the sugaring.  He's not too into the hauling of sap buckets, but he loves tending the evaporator.   He could be heard this evening trying to explain all the steps to his 4 yr old sister, who was only interested in warming her toes and hands.

(Do you see our log house in the background?  Hello, house!)

Steam's up!

Face Casing

Those cherry boards that were being planed a few weeks ago?  They're now face casing around the windows!

Plus, "face casing" is just fun to say.

Or is it just me?   Anyone?  Hello?
